Who will win Wimbledon 2011? Yes, the third and perhaps most prestigious Grand Slam tennis tournament of the year is upon us again and all the big guns are ready to do battle for one of the greatest prizes in sport.
The men’s side of the draw is looking as competitive as ever, but there are four names that are currently dominating the male side of the sport and are sure to be in the mix this time around.
Roger Federer – Arguably the most consistent player on the men’s circuit ever. He has appeared in at least the quarter final of the last 28 Grand Slam tournaments. Although without a Grand Slam win since the 2010 Australian Open, he has appeared in an incredible 23 finals, with a record of 16 wins.
Winning the majors has become more difficult since the emergence of Nadal, but Federer showed at the 2011 French Open that he still has the hunger and the ability to win more, despite losing out in the final to his great rival. Make no mistake; Roger Federer will be very tough to beat at Wimbledon, as his 6 existing titles prove.
Rafael Nadal – At 25 and almost 5 years junior to Roger Federer, Nadal already has 10 Grand Slam titles under his belt. Admittedly 6 of them came on the clay of Roland Garros but Rafa has certainly proved he can compete and win on all surfaces. Many thought that his Swiss rival was practically unbeatable on grass but 2 Wimbledon titles (and a third final) later and no one is any doubt that Nadal can hold his own at the All England Club.
Currently the defending men’s champion at Wimbledon, his recent triumph at the French Open will give him great confidence of a successful defence. His opponents, however, will cling to the fact that he isn’t quite as imperious on this surface as he is on clay.
Novak Djokovic – What a start he made to 2011! After claiming his second Gram Slam title in Australia he remained unbeaten until his Semi Final French Open clash with Roger Federer in May, a run of 41 straight victories.
Currently the world number 2 having overtaken Federer, Djokovic is in amazing form, has a strong all round game and will be difficult to beat. It would take a major upset to prevent him making at least the semi finals of Wimbledon this year.
Andy Murray – Probably the best player on the circuit to still be without a Grand Slam title. He has been a beaten finalist on three occasions, (twice In Australia and once at Flushing Meadows) and despite a bit of a wobble after his defeat to Djokovic in the 2011 Aussie Open final, is proving to be a very consistent performer.
His Semi Final at the French followed by recent tournament win at Queens (on grass) shows continued improvement. However, of the 4 top players in the world, (currently ranked 4th) Murray does appear the most prone to lapses in concentration. Whilst he has great mental strength to fight back in many situations, his occasional lack of focus within matches, may prove costly at Grand Slam level.
These four guys are inevitably the top four seeds at Wimbledon 2011 and there would be no surprise at all if they continued their personal head to head battles in the Semi Finals.
Who could challenge? It’s really difficult to look beyond the top four for this year, as they have just been so dominant, but perhaps if you were to throw a few other players into the hat, maybe someone like Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who has both the serve and the athleticism to compete well on the grass.
Robin Soderling is a really tough competitor but seems to struggle against the really big guns. Juan Martín del Potro on paper has plenty to offer, but since his Grand Slam win at the US Open in 2009 has suffered from persistent injury and loss of form.
If someone from outside this group were to claim the Wimbledon title this year, it would mean some huge upsets have taken place.
Check back here for some of the big results as the tournament progresses and enjoy the tennis!
So, all four of the main players profiled above made it safely and comfortably through the first round of Wimbledon 2011, with Murray the only one to drop a set. The three others mentioned also crusied through to round 2. (Updated 22.06.11)
Our list above has its first casualty. Robin Soderling has been beaten by Bernard Tomic in the 3rd round. Perhaps Soderling's previous match against Lleyton Hewitt proved to be the writing on the wall. The world number 5 fought back from the brink of defeat in that match but was found wanting in a straight sets defeat to Tomic.
All the other names above are safely into week 2 of Wimbledon 2011 (Updated 25.06.11)
Andy Murray and Bernard Tomic are the first men through to the men's Quarter Finals with convincing straight set wins over Richard Gasquet and Xavier Malisse respectively.
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga joined Murray, Tomic, Mardy Fish and Lopez in the Quarter Finals (Updated 27.06.11)
Breathe easy Nadal fans, the world number 1 has declared himself fit for his quarter final match with Mardy Fish after an injury scare in his fantastic battle with del Potro. (Updated 28.06.11)
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has beaten six times Wimbledon Champion Roger Federer in 5 sets to reach the Semi Finals!
Djokovic overcame spirited Bernard Tomic in 4 sets and will face Federer's conqueror in the last four.
Andy Murray and Rafael Nadal will do battle in the Semi Finals as Murray comfortably overcame Feliciano Lopez in straight sets and Nadal negotiated a 3rd set blip to beat Mardy Fish in four.(Updated 29.06.11)
It will be Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic in the 2011 Wimbledon final after both men came through their semi final matches in four sets.
Nadal looked to be in some trouble as Andy Murray played some superb tennis to take the first set but the defending champion raised his game and in the end was a comfortable winner.
Likewise, Djokovic controlled most of his match with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, although the French player did briefly rally to take set 3.
So it will be the two best players (on current form and ranking) who will do battle to be crowned Wimbledon Champion on Sunday 3rd July 2011. (Updated 01.07.11)
Novak Djokovic is the winner of Wimbledon 2011! The Serbian will also be confirmed as the new World number 1 as he defeated Rafael Nadal in four sets to take his crown. (Updated 03.07.11)

Thanks for the breakdowns, especially on Soderling and Murray. What is the key to winning on grass, of course, being great and balanced? Is it a powerful first serve? Thanks for your article.Respond to this comment

Thanks for reading Christofer! A powerful serve and volley game used to rule on grass, with players like Edberg, Becker, Sampras and Federer really dominating but Nadal, recently has challenged that way of thinking.
So, I guess if you are good enough, you can challenge, regardless of style. A big serve is always going to be tough to break though.

Great article. I would sure love to see Federer beat Nadal but they are very equally matched. Nadal is a tough competitor but Federer has class. The newcomer Djokovic has made things more unpredictable, which will make for an exciting event.Respond to this comment

Thanks for reading Lorilyn! Yes, it will certainly be interesting to see who comes out on top! All of them have played pretty well so far, although Robin Soderling is having a bit of a struggle so far today!
