Ashley Young has completed his transfer from Aston Villa to Man United for a fee believed to be in the region of £17 million. He joins Phil Jones at Old Trafford after the defender left Blackburn Rovers to join United in deal also thought to eventually be worth £17 million.
Young’s move to Manchester United is not a surprise as manager Alex Ferguson has long been an admirer of the player and the transfer was a matter of when rather than if. One wonders what role Young will play in the United team with skilful wide players Nani and Antonio Valencia both having good seasons last time out.
With Wayne Rooney and Javier Hernandez likely to be first choice strikers, perhaps Young will slot in behind them or be given a more central midfield role. Unless one of the wingers is off loaded this summer, we will just have to see how Young will fit in.
Meanwhile, Jordan Henderson’s £20 million move to Liverpool from Sunderland is the only other big money transfer of the summer so far. However, with players and managers now returning from holidays around the world and pre season not far away, we are likely to see an explosion of movement in the coming weeks as Premiership clubs are just itching to spend some money!
Spurs are desperately trying to hang on to players such as Luka Modric and Gareth Bale whilst simultaneously trying to attract new star names to keep the existing ones happy.
Who knows what sort of money Chelsea will spend, now that they have installed ex Porto boss, Andre Villa-Boas as manager. As successful as Villa-Boas has been in his short career it will certainly be interesting to see the player reaction to a boss that is younger than some of them!
Liverpool have made a great statement of intent with the signing of Henderson which follows on the heels of January deals for Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez.
It’s been all quite at Manchester City so far but you just know something big will happen there before the summer ends, even if it is just Carlos Tevez leaving.
Arsenal also face a fight to keep established stars such as Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri at the club whilst hunting for fresh faces that may make them a stronger outfit next season, after fading away dramatically last term.
The remainder of the teams in the English Premier League may well be jostling for, what some might consider, the scraps as they work within much tighter budgets. Despite this, there are sure to be a few transfers that will raise an eyebrow or two as August approaches.
