Women’s World Cup Finals in Germany are underway with hosts and firm favourites Germany off to a winning start in the ladies soccer tournament. Germany won their opening fixture 2-1 against Canada.
The official FIFA Women’s World Cup may have only been in existence since 1991 but a crowd of more than 70,000 at Germany’s opening match at the Olympic stadium in Berlin, proved that women’s football is arguably one of the fastest growing sports in the world.
Since its inception in 1991 there have been 5 finals and 3 winners with Germany and the USA winning two trophies each and Norway picking up the other in 1995. In a sport that once saw the American team dominate, it is certainly Germany, who have won the last two tournaments, that appear to be the dominant force now.
In 2011, there are 16 teams competing and they are split into 4 groups of four teams.
Group A: Germany, France, Canada and Nigeria
Group B: Japan, New Zealand, Mexico and England
Group C: USA, Korea DPR, Columbia and Sweden
Group D: Brazil, Australia, Norway and Equatorial Guinea
The top two from each group will go through to form the quarter finals with the final taking place on July 17th2011.
In the tournament’s other match so far, France were 1-0 victors over Nigeria. In the UK, the BBC are broadcasting live matches and highlights from the Women’s World Cup.
The atmosphere around the World Cup in 2011 seems to be very impressive and whilst it may not garner the same level of coverage that men’s soccer does (yet), the ladies game is certainly on the up.
