2 Easy Techniques to Improve Your Golf Score

Tee Write

How high should I tee up my ball?

This question arises many times during a season.  It depends entirely on what club you’re hitting.

First we will look at using a driver.  The top of your tee should be at least 1/2 an inch off the ground. However, if your driver has a very large face it will be necessary to tee the ball up higher in order to ensure that the ball meets the club's sweet spot.  With the new drivers you will find that the sweet spot is getting larger and larger. Ideally, you don't want your driver to hit the ground and you do want your ball to meet the sweet spot on the club. Therefore, you should tee the ball up high enough so that your club will be slightly off the ground and the ball will be in the middle of the club face.

Iron: Tee up an iron shot only slightly. It's basically like giving yourself a really great lie. Tee the ball up no more than 1/2 an inch when hitting an iron. Better yet if you’re at the skill level you may not even need to tee up your ball.  Most skilled golfers prefer to use the nice short grass off the tee.  This will help you from getting under the ball putting it high in the air, but with little distance.  Make sure you are not close to any divots as it can often be distracting or you may hit your club into the divot before you strike the ball.  Also remember to watch your footing and make sure your shoes have a good grip, otherwise you may slip and lose your footing and lose any power and accuracy you had.  As a golfer you should also be used to this feeling as this is the normal way you would strike a ball in the fairway or in the rough.

Speaking of tees I have developed an excellent aid for any golfer.  It is a golf tee that has pencil lead in the bottom.  You can use it to tee off and then record your score, all in the same hole.  I developed the idea in 2002, but until recently have not started distributing it.  This tee is an excellent gift idea for the golfer in your family.  It can also serve as a novelty item.
