1 Simple Technique to Improve Your Chip Shot and Lower Your Score

The Chip Shot is probably the most important stroke in the game of golf. If a chip shot is not executed properly, you don’t have the chance of making a decent put to at least get your par.

The chip shot is not only a useful shot to perform around the greens, but the fundamental motions of the chip can be transferred over to your full swing. If you want to make better contact with your full swing, then your first goal should be to master the chip shot.

When performing a chip shot it is extremely important to watch your hands. This is one of the most important lessons for the chip shot. Your hands/wrists should stay exactly the same as when you’re addressing the ball. The angle of your wrists must stay exactly the same. The hands must stay passive, do nothing with them except for holding the club. Your shoulders should move the club, much like you would when putting. Some of the things to look out for when performing the chip shot are: minimize your hand and wrist action/movement, the angles of your hands should stay exactly the same from start to finish. After impact, your left wrist should be straight and your right wrist should have a slight backwards bend. If you watch your hands and minimize your wrist/hand movement you should be well on your way to improving your chip shot and ultimately your swing.

Other things to note while making your chip shot: Make sure you strike the ball and avoid misjudging and hitting the ground first. If you do this the ball will go nowhere and you’re stuck performing another chip shot, but this time with less confidence. Also make sure you don’t hit the top of the ball and it goes too far, again you will find yourself performing another chip shot.

When making a chip shot, most golfers will alter their swing in order to compensate for short shot, instead try shortening your back swing. This means that you must drastically reduce the height of your backswing. Consider that during your chip shot the backswing should be about waist high – no higher. If you are having trouble gauging the height of your swing try practicing with a friend or video tape yourself on the driving range. You will then be able to see the height of your swing and how far you are hitting the ball. The swing should remain constant because it is the one thing that is most easily controlled. It’s all about consistency so you’ll need to make sure that your swing is of proper height so that you can still accelerate as usual.

It is best to practice all of these techniques out on the driving range first before you hit the links. Do not and I repeat do not try to adjust your chipping halfway through a round. Otherwise you will find yourself in serious trouble and just waiting to finish the game.

Remember when chipping watch your hands, make sure you strike the ball cleanly and do not adjust your swing, but rather the height of your back swing.
