Rugby World Cup 2011 kicks off in New Zealand on 9th September when the hosts will take on Tonga in the opening fixture.
The tournament will be the 7thrugby world cup which takes place every 4 years. South Africa are the reigning champions after their victory over England in 2007 and they also won the tournament in 1995. Other previous winners: New Zealand (1987), Australia (1991 & 1999), England (2003).
There are plenty of warm up matches still to be played but at this early stage, New Zealand are the overwhelming odds on favourites (8-13) to lift the William Webb Ellis Cup on Sunday 23rdOctober 2011. Australia are currently second favourites at 4-1 with South Africa at 7-1.
20 teams will compete in 4 pools of 5 teams with the top two in each group going through to the quarter final stage.
Venues: Matches will be played across New Zealand in several cities but the opening match along with 2 quarter finals, both semi finals and the rugby world cup final will be played at Eden Park in Auckland.
