UEFA Euro 2012 hosts Poland will play Greece (Euro 2004 winners) in the opening fixture of the tournament. Both Poland and joint hosts Ukraine will be delighted to have avoided the two toughest groups (on paper at least).
The tournament will kick off on June 8th 2012 in Warsaw and the final will be played in Kiev on July 1st 2012.
Spain will undoubtedly be ranked as favourites to retain the trophy they won in 2008 (and then went on to win the World Cup in South Africa 2010) and if successful will be the first nation in history to have won 3 major tournaments back to back.
The draw for these fantastic soccer tournaments always seems to conjure up a “group of death” and Euro 2012 is no exception with Group B consisting of Netherlands, Denmark, Germany and Portugal. It means at least one giant of European football will not be present in the quarter finals.
However, Germany always perform well at the finals and the Dutch are very strong right now and perhaps in Robin van Persie, currently have the best striker in Europe to propel them forwards. Will the group of death end up leaving Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo without a top stage to perform on?
Spain's record in competitive matches in recent years is nothing short of outstanding but they too find themselves in a group that will be no less than interesting, there are no pushovers amongst Italy, Croatia or Republic of Ireland.
England are yet to discover whether they will have striker and star man, Wayne Rooney available as he appeals a 3 match ban awarded for his red card against Montenegro. The English will however, be pleased with the group they are in as they face a French team that have been poor in the last two major tournaments, Sweden and fellow tournament hosts Ukraine.
