Tennis 2012 - A Grand Slam of Information:Tournaments,Schedule, Players, Results

It promises to be a bumper and busy year for all the big tennis stars in 2012. Along with the four Grand Slam events and other tournaments, there is the somewhat small matter of Olympic tennis to contend with, with many of the world’s best players sure to want to add Olympic gold to hopefully go along with a Grand Slam winner’s trophy.

With the London 2012 Olympics also staging the tournament at Wimbledon, players will get two shots at glory at the All England Club.

Let’s take a quick look at the schedule for the main events of 2012:

Australian Open (Melbourne): January 16th– January 29th

French Open (Roland Garros) May 27th– June 10th

Wimbledon (All England Club) June 25th– July 8th

Olympics 2012 (Wimbledon All England Club) July 28th– August 5th

US Open (Flushing Meadows) August 27th– September 9th

Add to the above list, a whole host of other tournaments in both men’s and women’s competition and it makes for a very hectic year for the athletes and indeed the fans!

In fact, once the French Open rolls around, there will barely be time for a breather in between tournaments. Is it any wonder the players often complain of fatigue and an exhausting travel schedule?

Perhaps, the intention of Rafael Nadal to take a break for the whole of February may be replicated by other players.

At the time of writing, the Australian Open is just days away and the anticipation for both players and fans is mounting.

On the men’s side, can anyone stop the dominance of Novak Djokovic? Roger Federer and Nadal are likely to be circling once more but can Andy Murray, under the inspiration of new coach, Ivan Lendl, finally break through to win a major.

Perhaps Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Thomas Berdych will be the main threats outside of the top 4 but the whole season may turn into a war of attrition with so much tennis scheduled, so we may yet see an upset or two!

Over on the women’s tour, things once again look much more difficult to call. With four different Grand Slam winners in 2011 in, Kim Clijsters (Australian), Li Na (French), Petra Kvitova (Wimbledon) and Samantha Stosur (US) and none of them currently holding the number 1 spot (Caroline Wozniacki going into Australia 2012), it would take someone very brave to bet on the outcome of women’s tennis this year!

Stay tuned for all the results and major news as it breaks and watch the tennis year unfold. It’s sure to be a fantastic year for all those involved with sports journalism and the millions of fans around the world.

Australian Open 2012

No Surprises in the men's draw in Melbourne, with all top 4 seeds once again contesting the semi finals. Federer v Nadal and Murray v Djokovic.

A similar situation was avoided in the women's draw when 11th seed Kim Clijsters defeated world number 1 Caroline Wozniacki. Clijsters will now take on 3rd seed Azarenka for a place in the final while a repeat of 2011 Wimbledon final between Maria Sharapova and Petra Kvitova will decide who contests the final. If either Sharapova or Kvitova triumph, they will also become the new world number 1.
