Sport or sporting events are part of our diet of daily life. Love it or loathe it, you have no choice but to encounter it at some point. There are TV channels dedicated to 24/7 sports and even non sports channels show a large volume of sporting programs. Our news channels will deliver reports of sports events both large and small and the media in general will give us a 360 degree view of sporting life, the good, the bad and the ugly!

How does one go about choosing the top sports in the world? Surely, the criteria for selecting such a list would depend very much on where you live or what you base the foundation of the list upon? Most watched sports, wealthiest sports, most played sports, and the list could be endless!

So, I have chosen to base this list of top 5 sporting events as a sports fan from the UK and my own personal preferences. Almost all sport is great, so please feel free to comment below and tell us what your own personal favourites are and why.

1. Olympic Games – For between 2 and 3 weeks out of every 208 (4 years) the whole world of sport unites to celebrate perhaps the biggest competitive event there is. At the Olympics in London 2012 there will be 26 unique sports divided up into 39 different disciplines. Competing will be more than 200 different countries, making this a truly global event. Everyone has their own favourite event at the games and it’s probably fair to say there is something for everyone.

2. World Cup Soccer/Football – The FIFA World Cup is another occasion that swings around every 4 years and soccer or football, as it’s known in Europe, is without doubt the biggest single sport in the world. 204 countries were whittled down to the 32 that made up the finals in 2010, with Spain being the eventual winners. In 2006, more than 715 million people tuned in to watch the final between Italy and France with Italy claiming victory in a penalty shoot out.

3. The Masters Golf Tournament – There is no doubting the incredible popularity of this event but it’s very much a personal entry at number 3. The sublime beauty of the Augusta National Golf Club combined with the fierce competition between the world’s best golfers makes for a unique sporting event. Different golfers may have their own personal favourite events but each and every one of them dreams of playing at the Masters each and every year in the hope of claiming the coveted green jacket, just like players such as Tiger Woods, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo and Phil Mickelson have done in the past.

4. Formula One Monaco Grand Prix – Comfortably the most prestigious event in the Formula One calendar, this race around the tight and twisty streets of Monte Carlo is perhaps at the pinnacle of motor racing. A playground for the rich and famous with a dramatic Mediterranean backdrop, the sea on one side and the mountains on the other with the race track itself sandwiched between, it’s a real test of a driver’s skill and concentration.

5. Wimbledon Tennis Championships – Not every player favours the grass of Wimbledon in June every year but the third Grand Slam event of the year is widely held in high esteem by both players and fans. Perhaps one of the ironies of such a successful tournament being held on British soil is the ongoing search for a modern era British Champion (no winner since Fred Perry in 1936). However it remains a classic sporting event and in recent years terrific matches between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have only enhanced its profile. Some other great modern names to have graced the famous centre court are, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Boris Becker, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Venus and Serena Williams, Bjorn Borg, John McEnroe and Billy Jean King.

So, there you are - 5 fabulous sporting events to sink your teeth into! If you have any interest in writing about the sports you love, then why not consider a sports journalism course?
